X was supposed to stand for "non-standard specs", of which it would seem
all alpines were. Why Alpines were not standard, I am not sure, but I
have
never heard that the X stood for high compression.
The compression with a series 1 engine with a virgin head and flat tops
would be about 11.5 to 1 CR.
This would make for a seemingly lively engine, but without gas to go
with it, its just a bucket of lump.
Sounds like someone got creative with Rootes parts, and put
Minx pistons in the Rapier engine.
The engine blocks were stamped just under the head "HC" or "LC".
HC would mean the normal 9.2/1 CR, and the LC was something like
8/1.
