Well because Lucas designed it that way.. :-)

Clearly it seems it was their first design and there are lots
of things that could be improved..

A long time ago I looked at upgrading the 10AC to put out more
current.. I was running lots of older 2 way radios that really
could have used more current.. Ended up it was easier to put in a
VW alternator..

Regardless it didn't look to hard to rewind the field and upgrade
the rectifiers and heat sink. I actually was considering doing
that to the show car.. Then I reallized I'd bend the needle of
the ammeter.. :-)
