Robert,
I think that you are refering to the studs mounted on the rear cowl
section between the fenders. The previously mentioned repair methods
were for the stud at the top of the B piller (the front most stud on the
top of the rear fender) where you cannot access the inner area of the
panel with your hands to install the nut. Your method is the way to go
though on the two studs on the rear cowl.
