Does the engine have (1600) cast just above the starter?
The engine's vintage would suggest it is a 1600 3 main.

Does your engine have an aluminum head?
If it does, then what you have is a Minx block with alpine
internals.
3 main minx's have iron heads, special intake/exhuast/cam,
different pistons ECT, but the block is suitible for building an
alpine spec engine, with the correct alpine parts.
All minx induction components (which differentiate the minx and alpine
engines) are incompatible with the alluminum alpine/rapier head.

I saw a real Minx engine in an alpine once.
It was a single carbed iron head minx engine.
Pretty anemic.
Someone must have been pretty desperate.
