Chris, and alpiners,

Pull the rocker cover, and rotate the engine till the the #1 intake valves are both closed at TCD. This only really ocurrs at #1 TDC, but be warned that #1 TDC may look like the exh almost closed, and the int just opening at TDC, This is really #4 TDC so be carefull.

After you have established that you are trully at #1 TCD, pop off the dist cap. Rought the #1 plug wire to the corresponding post on the cap. The rotor should have a rotation arrow on it, but if not, rotate the engine clockwise "looking at the engine" to figure the correct rotation of the distributor (anticlockwise I think). Anyhow the next wire will be 3, followed by 4 then 2.

1 3 4 2.

Many distibributors have been installed incorrectly over the years, and when the drive dog has been put on in the wrong phase, or of the oil-pump was installed out of phase, the rotor will not exactly line up with the distributor cap, and you will not get an adequate fire.

Read the workshop section on the oil pump shaft alignment for more details.
