There is an inspection plate, at least on the early cars, but I dont think it goes that far back. Even if it does, the shifter giblets are over the OD unit anyhow.
Removing the hydrolic supply valve may allow you to see if any oil is being pumped, but that will only tell you of catastrophic failure of the pump, not normal clearance failure (worn pumps still pump oil, just not at the required pressure).
Unfortunately, you wont know the true failure till you pull the pump, and you cant pull the pump with the OD mounted on the adtapter. Looks to me that the OD can be pulled in the same manner as the tranny itself. This would involve pulling the radiator, and tilting the engine on its mounts till the OD can slide out the back of the tranny without any part hitting the x-member. Remember that the OD has to slide off more than 12 inches before it is free of the mainshaft.
Have you checked the filter?
