Maybe the shells weren't up to the job, and he just upped the grain/pressure to get the job done.
Glass beads shatter on impact, and it's the shock that breaks the paint off. (And the reason it does nothing to oil or tar or stuck rubber bits - clean the surface first.) By the time the beads have any abrasive effect, they're already much smaller than they were at first.
It may be necessary to pre-strip areas of the car that have been painted over with more than one colour, if only to make the beader's job less difficult, and less likely that he'll need to "lean on" the blaster.
