My general impression has been that the oil cooler does not make much difference in keeping the engine much cooler, that is truly the job of the radiator and cannot be replaced by any other device. I hope that by keeping the oil a little cooler it does slow down the degradation of the oil caused by extreme heat bringing longer life and everlastin' happiness to the engine. But, considering the quality of modern oil (you do use good oil don't you;-) and the frequency with which it should be changed, I don't see this as much of a help for a general use vehicle. If you decide to go ahead with the modification, do please be sure to route the hoses correctly, I understand the original configuration could cause a lack of oil flow to the engine with unpleasant consequences.
