Another reason (besides performance) that the cross-flow head is a better design: exhaust on one side, intake on the other. Unfortunately, we're stuck with the carbs above the exhaust manifold, and the potential for fireworks. The best thing you can do to start is to install an in-line fuel filter. That should reduce the likelihood of crud under the needle and seat causing the bowl to overflow. With an electric pump, you might also check the pressure on the fuel line. 3 to 4 psi is all you need, and any more could cause fuel to blow by the needle valve. You can install a pressure regulator in-line to control the flow.

All of this is like re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic if you haven't cleaned and treated your gas tank. That is the most likely source of crud in the carb. It will continue to clog you carb or filters until treated. BTW, do you carry a fire extinguisher in your car? Try the Haylon type. It doesn't leave a residue that is a mess to clean up.

On your Pugeot question. Chrysler sold its European holdings to Pugeot in 1978. The old Rootes Rayton plant now has a Pugeot lion on the gate. It is entirely likely that there was some badge engineering going on between what Chrysler was making and what Pugeot produced initially. By-and large, Chrysler Europe offered such un-inspiring cars at this time, that not many people took the time to sort it all out. Attached is a crude gif of the Rootes family tree.
