If you have the early carb "zeniths" setup on your series 1, you should have copper plumbing between the fuel pump and both carbs. The copper line has compression fitings at all ends.
I'd hate to tell you to cut into your copper feed line, but if you want to put a filter inline after the pump, thats what youd have to do.
If cutting the line is not in your agenda, at the very least, remove the copper line, and run some wire through it to remove any scale and crud. Blow the line out with compressed air, then run carb cleaner that has toloul, tolulene or xylene through it. Any carb cleaner that doesnt have those nasty volitiles is one of the newer "eco" cleaners, and it just doesnt clean varnish very well.
Always use the correct pump "with that glass bowl" as it is the only fuel filter you have. Most after market pumps will bolt in, but dont have the cleanable inline filter.
