I have been reading this thread with dread. My fuel pump glass bowl suddenly filled last Friday with paint shedding from the fuel tanks. I had heard of this and intended to do the tank clean/strip/coat process next winter. Wrong. I must do it now.

I immediately cleaned out the bowl and installed an inline fuel filter AFTER the pump [Fram G1 i think] using new fuel tubing rather than cut my original [I think] line.

It should run safe now as long as the fuel line from tank to pump does not plug up. I suppose it would be foolish to go very far away and have that happen so I have scrapped my plan to bring the Alpine to Victoria this weekend but Tony I will be at Beacon Park on Sunday, afoot.
