I have a somewhat hypothetical question that could apply to a four cylinder engine such as that on an Alpine.

Assume that the fuel system is working properly, that the carburetors are properly adjusted, that the spark plugs are new and correctly gapped, the distributer cap is clean, the points new and correctly gapped, and that the coil is good.

Also assume that the distributer is incorrectly timed.

The engine starts easily and revs up when not in gear, but with the car in gear the engine has little power when the accelerator is pressed and the car can only get up to about twenty miles per hour.

Assume that the symptoms are due to the mistiming of the spark.

1. Is the spark too far advanced or too far retarded, or is it not possible to tell from the above symptoms?

2. Is it correct that if the distributer body is rotated in the direction in which the distributor rotor turns that the spark is advanced, while if it is rotated in the opposite direction the spark is retarded?

I would appreciate answers from our ignition savvy members. Fred Levit fle426(at)nwu.edu

Well, I guess I qualify as a "lurker" so I will defend my position.

I did not register for the event for two reasons, the main being that my car is not yet complete, though should be in the next month or so. The second is that most of my money is going to a 2 week vacation in VA and NC that I'm leaving for tomorrow. I could have stayed home that weekend and packed but I went out of my way to go to that event, if only for one day. I agree that it is up to us to make our presence felt in CAT. We have obviously fallen short in that regard. However, that does not negate the fact that CAT support of the Alpine contingent is slim.

Had there been anything besides the cheap hats I mentioned in my first post I would have spent my money. I do not believe that CAT has worked very hard to accomodate or encourage membership from Alpine owners. If Alpine owners are really desired then why don't they change their name to CAAT? I think the name itself implies exclusivity. They don't offer anything exclusive to Alpines beyond those cheap hats that I know of. I think CAT could look to the example of TE/AE in terms of club support for both marques. Finally, isn't the cost of staging an event covered by registration fees, membership fees and parts sales? How does failure to "contribute a goddam nickle" to the cost of staging the event make me or anyone else a second class member (i.e., "lurker")? Frankly, I find the tone and these comments distasteful.
