wire wheels/hubs

How tight should the wire wheels be on the splines of the hubs? I noticed a "knock" in my front end when I brake. Both front wheels can be rotated slightly on the splines unless the knockoff is REALLY tightened hard. The problem seems to recur again later, though.

Is this the dreaded worn hub problem? If so, is there a solution other than replacing the hubs (as these seem to be in very short supply)??

The solution which I want to lean for, is chucking the wires for some "regular" bolt on wheels, but I guess I'd need to find other hubs then anyway, right?

I'm troubled by this...

Any advice??
