I had this problem years ago when I owned a Series III with wire wheels. You are correct, the problem is worn splines. Back in those days you could still find Alpines, Hillmans, etc. in the junk yard and get some spare parts but now it's a little tough. Either way you will have to change something, the choice is up to you, spend the money to fix it once by going to bolt on wheels or spend the money again later by sticking with the wire wheel setup. I remember that I had a 69 Mustang that had bolt on wire wheels. I don't remember the MFG but this might be an option if you like the wire wheel look.
