Before you start worrying about the plastic couplings, the whole
"flexible shaft" joining the two carbs is connected to the front carb
throttle shaft with a clamp, which can be loosened with a screw driver,
provided the hex nut on the other side is properly retained by the ridge
on the clamp. Then you remove any slack between the front throttle plate
and the rear throttle plate, and retighten the clamp. I have done this
quite successfully with my current set up and with a previous car.
