Back from England

I have just returned from my litle holiday in England, and while there took advantage of the opportunity to attend a Car Show at Loseley House, in Guildford, Surrey. I found out about it because I had made contact with Derek Cook, membership chairman of STAR. I have joined STAR, and had a lovely afternoon at the show. The Sunbeam participation was ALL pre-1955 autos, two Alpine roadsters (proper Alpines?), and about half a dozen Saloons and Coupes.

It was very nice to meet the group, and they were especially gracious in welcoming two Americans. In particular, I liked two cars owned by Jeff Dodd, who had a Saloon and a Coupe, both in VERY fine shape. It is his hope to pick up an Alpine of the same vintage, so that he can have a complete set! His wife has let him know they need an addition to the house more! Somethings are the same, no matter where you are.

If he can satisfy his wish, he thinks he might be the first person to have actually accomplished that. The Saloons on display were universally in better shape than the two roadsters, though the roadsters were both fairly nice.

Speaking of clubs, this group apparently have all become friends and frequently get together, help each other with repair, restoration and upkeep problems, but apparently have almost no computer expertise. Of course, England is a much smaller place than America, and this sort of F2F contact is easier to arrange.

It interests me that there were NO 1959-67 Alpines on display, though I failed to discuss the matter with them. Are the later Alpines (and the interest in them) largely an American phenomenon?
