What does your ignition timing look like?
Sometimes the centrifugal advance doesnt return like it should, and you have a heavily advanced ignition.
Disconnect the high tension lead from the distributor, and I'l bet it spins pretty good.
High compression engines in race cars often have an ignition toggle switch that allows the engine to spin freely tell the starter is up to speed, then bam, the ignition come on and the thing starts.
