Interesting question, Chuck. Assuming you have a crunch box on your S II;
only if you got the trans to go with it. I checked the manual, and the
troubleshooting section pinpointed your problem as "Operator Error".
I recently changed shift knobs. The one I was using was a chrome ball about
as heavy as a small wrecking ball (but it had a Rootes emblem on it). I
changed to a lighter wooden one (also with a rootes emblem), and the feel of
the shifter is vastly improved. I remember using one of the heavy chrome
ones on my S I Alpine in the early '60s, and my Brother broke the shifter
lever off at the hilt during an enthusiastic speed shift.
As I recall, the knob of choice in my youth was a ceramic Coors beer tap
handle. How to distract the bartender to swipe one was always a problem, as
was getting into the bar with a fake ID. I wish all my problems were that
simple today.
Anyway, if you're still having trouble, try driving in reverse. That way
you won't have to shift at all.
