heater core and thermo housing removal

Listers,

Shipwright's has bitten me. To get the gearbox out of my S3 I had to
remove the radiator. While the rad was out I decided to replace the
hoses and install a thermostat. Once the thermo cover was off it was
obvious that the thermostat housing itself needed replacement.

At last Q1: Any tips on removing the thermo housing? I have slackened
all 5 nuts and doused in penetrating fluid, tapped with a hammer, and
tried backing out the 2 long studs - all to no avail.

Back to Shipwright's; I decided to flush the heater core too, removed
the access panel and hoses but how do I get the core out? I can't seem
to get it out through the access hole created by removing the bonnet
catch plate. I can flush it insitu but I want to clean out all the
leaves etc and fit new seals under the core, so it would be easier if
the core came out.

Cheers,
Paul.
