Really?

I thought it was becuase the alpine was derived from 50's technology
Rootes engineering, where then engineering staff had just graduated
to pressurized cooling systems.

I really dont think that head gasket sealing problems were an issue
back when the alpine was new, back then, the heads were all in good
shape.

A little math will show that the head to block sealing force was adequate
to seal to hundreds of PSI before leakage would occur, after all the same
gasket also sealed the block to the combustion chambers.
