Bummer.

Yes, there are specialists who can weld up cast iron cranks.
A good crank welder will be tough to find, so go by reccomendation.
I would say it should depend upon where your journals are now.
If you are at STC, and have .010 eggshape, go to 20 or 30.
If you are are 40, or have enough eggshape to take you there or
beyond, get a new crank, or have it welded.

I dont think welding the crank is a bad idea for a normal engine
application.
I do think welding a cracked crank is always a bad idea, which is where
a lot of confusion exists about when to weld a crank.

The answer to the question is definatively yes.
However if you have or have access to a cherry picker, the job
will be far easier pulling the engine.

The problem lies in that the engine is supported by the engine support
plate, and unfortunately, the cranks snout protrudes through this part.
The engine must be jacked, motor mounts unbolted from the chassis
then the engine supported, crank pully removed, timing cover
removed, then the engine support plate.
The above verbage sounds trivial, its not. There is not a lot of
clearance
and you will have to remove just about every thing the bolts to the front
of the engine including the water pump.
The tranny will have to be pulled.
The crank can now be dropped "gently" to the floor.

Ive done this only once, and will never do it again.

Rent a cherry picker, at least it will save you from dropping the
tranny.
