There is a different rootes part number for OD speedos vs std speedos.
I would assume that there is a different odometer drive gearset inside,
and the spring tension a little different.

Yes, differential ratio does matter, since all OD alpines except SIII came
with
4.22 rear ends, his could be the difference between the non OD and
OD speedos. If this is the case, you would use the speedo that goes
with the cars stock rear end.

Oh, and someone once told me that the speedo cable drive assembly
is the same parts on std trannys as well as OD trannys, they just mount
in different places. Can anyone confirm?
