Gear oil in ANY Rootes trans is a no-no. The chemical compounds in
gear oil will have an adverse affect on the synchros and bronze bushes. Of
course, this is doubly so with an OD attached.
The odd thing is, Laycock left it up to the manufacturer of the car to
decide what fluid to use, rather like Borg Warner did with automatic trannies.
Some chose to use ATF in the ODs, some engine oil.
I, for one, have stayed with non-detergent motor oil in my OD. I have
heard claims that the detergents in modern motor oils and ATF are no good for
the friction materials used in 30-40 year old ODs. I'm not gonna chance it!
Maybe if the OD ever needs rebuilding, but knock wood, it works just like it
did when I first put it in 15 years ago!
