Perhaps ATF was in its infancy and so SAE 30 non-detergent engine oil was
specified. The '84 Volvo Turbo that I owned and used ATF in the manual
gearbox with O/D now has 370,000 kms on it and still functions flawlessly.
I think this is a valid testimonial on the virtues of using ATF in manual
gearboxes with O/D.
