There is a set screw in the side of the air valve to lock down the needle. On some, the needle then remains fixed with respect to the rest of the air valve. On others, the part of the air valve that the needle locks into moves up and down about 1/8 inch. Therefore the needle moves in the jet. Is this by design or is it broken. How would I fix this? The spring-loaded needles were installed on the smog-equipped Strombergs installed on the later Arrows and Alpine fastbacks. Sounds like a previous owner didn't want to (or didn't know how to) go thru the hassle of centralizing the jets

The specific type of spring-loaded needle varied according to model (eg. CDS, CDS-3, CDSE(U.S. cars), etc...)

Don't know if using those needles is advisable. What size are they? How about the jets?
