OK Listers,

the secrets from the UK Harrington enclave........

There are basically 4 variants of the Harirngton :

'A' Type - based on a series 2 Alpine with a fibreglass roof which comes down to half way across the original trunk lid. There is a shortened trunk lid which opens to make the series 2 trunk even smaller !!

Le Mans - A complete change to the rear end which does away with the fins and incorprates a tailgate - reputed by some to be the first car to offer a hatchback? The rear wings are cut down and folded over to make a lip for the fibregalss roof to bolt to. I rebuilt a really rusty one a few years ago and it is an interesting challenge.

'C' type - this is again based on a series 2 (not 3 as stated by some). Around 12 were made of which I know of 6 including my own. The roof is designed to retain the rear pointy fins and incorporates a hatchback and a rear roof vent. This makes the car look a bit like an Aston. I can E mail a photo of mine if anyone is really interested.

'D' type - this uses the same roof as the C type but is based on a sereis 4 body and therefore has the reduced wings. There are reportedly 3 cars produced of which 2 are concours examples in the UK. One owned by a colleague of mine and the other is currently for sale in the Uk at =A311,000 ( approx $18,000).

The car Jay is describing is a one off roof produced by Paul Knayston in the UK. It is not a Harrington but I agree it is a really nice variation on a theme. Paul is in the motor trade and aparently may consider making copies ! the car is basically a sereis 5.

hopw it help clarify

regards
