You can find a wiring diagram for the Series I Alpine at http://www.mindspring.com/~teae/awire1.gif

Using the wiring diagram and a continuity tester, you can eventually track down the component that burned out. Check the fuses (on driver side in engine compartment on a Series IV), and your control box near them. Since you indicate that the WHOLE system is dead, then I would suspect components within the ignition switch circuit.

Debugging electrical problems is hit and/or miss. I once tracked down a problem with my Alpines' headlight switch in this manner, but it took longer than I'd like to admit.
