I installed mine in the very same spot and have had no problems. In fact,
the pump looks spotless. So, it has not picked up much or any road grime.
I put it there for two reasons. First, as Rob said, I heard closer to the
fuel tank the better because the pumps push better than pull. Second, I
heard that the lower the better. So, I did not put it up above the axle,
but down as low and as protected as could be - in the cross member.
