Introductions and Front End Questions

Hello fellow Alpiners,

I've been lurking in the background for the last couple of months, spending
most of my lunch breaks perusing through the Archives. Given that the pace
of my Series IV restoration project is picking up somewhat, I felt it was
time to come out of the closet.

The Series IV has been in the family for quite some time. Dad and I did a
quick restoration job on it when I was of the age that getting ANY car to
drive was much more important than the originality issue. That, followed by
eight years of trying to maintain an Alpine on a high school and college
student's budget, resulted in many hack jobs. The last ten years of her
life has been spent under blue tarps in the snow of Montana and the rain of
Seattle. She still runs, but just enough to back her in and out of the
driveway...the time has finally come to repair all the damage I've done and
get her back on the road.

My plan is to perform a full up restoration and get the car as close to
stock as possible. To support this project I managed to locate some good
deals on parts cars. On the road trip from hell (don't know how I talked my
wife into going on this one), I was able to fill up the back of the pickup
with every useful piece from a battered Series IV that I located in
Atascadero (from the same guy who has the yellow Series V that Tim Beloney
mentioned recently.... it looked to be in pretty decent shape). A month
later I stumbled upon a S-V shell just a few miles north of my house in
Seattle (I'm even more baffled at how I managed to get purchasing authority
from my wife on this one). Between the three, I've probably got enough for
2 cars, but in the end will be happy with one clean Series IV.

Currently I'm in the process of rebuilding the front end from one of the
parts cars, and this process has generated a couple of questions. Does
anyone know what the minimum thickness that the rotors can be turned down
to. They're pitted and gouged and I'd like to smooth them up prior to
reassembly. Also, are the motor mount brackets on a Series I cross member
identical to those on a Series IV? The S-IV that I'm rebuilding is missing
the brackets, and a S-1 front end that I have lying around happens to have
them.

Thanks in advance.
