You can run it without the servo without ill effect. The syptom you
describe (immediate lockup w/slight pressure) is indicative of the
vacuum piston not being able to move freely or getting stuck. The
problem is likely that the leather seal on the piston has become dried
out or that the inside of the atmospheric chamber has become rusted, or
the servo has failed and leaked fluid into the chamber. If you remove
the cover to the chamber and don't find fluid, then the servo may still
be good. If you find rust, clean the inside of the chamber thoroughly
and remove all traces of rust. In any case, if the leather seal is
still good, soak the piston in Neats Foot Oil overnight. When you
reinstall it, make sure it slides freely back and forth inside the
chamber. As long as your servo is not pitted in the bores and the
seals bad, it should work after this.
