As for the tag by the door, I have one also. I believe it was put there
when they did a quickie chain paint job. Someone pointed out that the DMV
actually included the Sunbeam number in their tag, so I was able to check
that the papers, engine, and body matched.
I've had very bad luck with DMV on the re-registration front. They nailed
me with my first and current Alpine. Even though it was off the street
before the new rules went into affect, they went back to when it should have
been registered as non-op and ding'd me heavy. Even though it was a salvage
job it was still about $250 as I recall, I had the guy I was buyinh it from
take half of it off what I owed him and still paid too much (but then I got
the Alpine so it was OK). Funny thing was the wife went to do the second
Alpine over in Marin and somehow sweet talked them and we paid a lot less.
Don't believe them when they tell you you're safe.
