Be VERY careful with engine degreasers, especially around paint you like.

What I did a little later after I got my car was to use varsol in a
spray bottle on a _warm_ (not hot) engine, outdoors, with a stiff
plastic-bristled brush, a paint-scraper and lots of paper towels. Put an
old blanket underneath to catch the mess. You could prop your car up
and remove the wheels. I had some thick foam to lean on over the
fenders. After you do this you _might_ want to go over the lot with
lots of soapy water on one of those mop-like towlet-bowl cleaners.
