Robert,
Here are a couple of possibilities.

1. Blocked up cores in engine block. People (including me) have found
'sand like' substances in the cooling cores when changing core plugs.
Apart from dropping the gearbox and changing the core plugs you could
try pressure flushing the engine. If that doesn't work try changing one
of easier to get at core plugs and see if there is much goop in there.
If there is, at least you know what the problem is....
NOTE - beware when pressure flushing, the cooling system will only take
about 10lbs before the heater core pops!

2. Water pump impellor is slipping on the shaft.

3. A fellow club member had the corrosion in his ally head repaired.
After that the car would overheat *sometimes*. Turns out they welded up
the coolant passages and re-drilled the holes too small.
