Re: to be or not to be?

Mike,

My opinion is that you have, as you say, an all original car, and that you should keep
it that way. Plenty of examples of Alpines that are no longer original. Plenty of
owners who wish their car was more original. Seems a shame to take an original
example and modify it. This is my opinion.

But it is YOUR car. What are you looking for ? I suggest that you do a little self
determination as to what your requirements are. You say that the engine leaks oil.
Does it otherwise run well ? Maybe you want the fun and challenge of performing an
engine transplant. It is your car, so figure out what it is that you want out of
this.

You know, just because you have a V6 engine, trans and ford rear end in one end of your
garage, and an Alpine in another part of your garage, doesn't mean that you have to
marry the two together.

One last thought, again along the lines of a self examination. You might want to ask
yourself why the car is not running perfectly right now. Worn distributor ? Leaking
oil from a gasket ?, etc. Then ask your self why you haven't gotten around to fixing
these. Too much trouble ? Not enough time ? (I know that these are some of the
answers) Seems hard to imagine that swapping an engine/trans/rear end is going to be
easier or requie less time.

ps: I hope that this does not sound like a slam on conversions, it is not. I am
sharing some of my thoughts here. I own a farily original Alpine that I am trying to
restore to reasonable originality. I am also giving serious thought to finding a less
original Alpine without an engine so that I can modify it with a high reving, modern
engine with 5 speed.
