Rob,
I saw this once before, as unlikely as it might seem.  
1)  Take a voltmeter or a test light and check the battery.  This proves your
battery is charged, and the meter or test light works.
2)  Crawl under the dash and find a good ground for one of the probes.  If
your car is positive ground, use the red (+) lead on the meter, and scratch a
little paint off if you have to.
3)  Touch the meters second probe to each of the ammeter terminals, one at a
time.
4)  If you have voltage on one terminal, but not on the other one, your
ammeter has opened (like a fuse).  You can use a test light for this as well.
        The solenoids are pretty rugged, so I doubt it has been damaged.  It is
always possible that it drew so much current that the battery has opened...(I
have seen that too)!  Let me know if I was right!
