Not being happy to leave well enough alone, I have finally 
removed the last traces of sound deadening/undercoating gunk 
from the floor pan of my SV before painting. I wish I had 
though of using this tool earlier as it would have saved my 
many hours of hand scraping. The tool I used was a FEIN 
MultiMaster detail sander. Its vibrating head oscillates at 
21000 strokes per second in a 3 degree arc. In addition to 
its triangle sanding and polishing heads, there are 
available rasp, saw, scraper and chisel blades. The stiff 
scraper blade cut through the undercoating with ease leaving 
a mostly bare metal surface in its wake. The scraper blade 
will mar metal if youre not careful so I wouldnt recommend 
its use anywhere a pristine final finish is desired. This 
tool is not inexpensive (normally $300+/-, I borrowed it 
from work) plus accessory blades so you might look for it at 
a rental center. According to several trade publications, 
this tool is far superior to the other detail sanders on the 
market (Ryobi, B&D...) Looking at my Wooden Boat magazine, I 
see they are selling a MultiMaster Package for under $200.
