Not being happy to leave well enough alone, I have finally
removed the last traces of sound deadening/undercoating gunk
from the floor pan of my SV before painting. I wish I had
though of using this tool earlier as it would have saved my
many hours of hand scraping. The tool I used was a FEIN
MultiMaster detail sander. Its vibrating head oscillates at
21000 strokes per second in a 3 degree arc. In addition to
its triangle sanding and polishing heads, there are
available rasp, saw, scraper and chisel blades. The stiff
scraper blade cut through the undercoating with ease leaving
a mostly bare metal surface in its wake. The scraper blade
will mar metal if youre not careful so I wouldnt recommend
its use anywhere a pristine final finish is desired. This
tool is not inexpensive (normally $300+/-, I borrowed it
from work) plus accessory blades so you might look for it at
a rental center. According to several trade publications,
this tool is far superior to the other detail sanders on the
market (Ryobi, B&D...) Looking at my Wooden Boat magazine, I
see they are selling a MultiMaster Package for under $200.
