Robert,
Don't bother about measuring voltages at the temp gauge. Just hook one
end of a known resistor (see below) to the sender wire and connect the
other end to ground. By changing the resistor you should be able to get
the gauge to indicate various temp readings. DO NOT connect the wire
straight to ground it is not good for the gauge.
You can use your meter to measure the resistance of your temp sender as
the car warms up.
