If you have a series V with the original carbs, then you don't have an
accelerater pump.

You didn't say what version car you had, but I have had this problem
with Strombergs in various cars. To guarentee a quick start in my GT6, I
would open the hood and prime the carbs with the manual pump lever.

The best solution I have found yet is to convert to an electric fuel
pump.
