I tried one of those Honda water/heater valves on my Series V Alpine a couple
of years ago. Here's the problem: Even in the "shut" position, they still let a
small amount of water through to the heater core so you get heat, wanted or
not, even with the valve in the off position. If you look at the construction
of the valve and how it operates, you'll see that this is a weird, on purpose
design. Eventually, rumaging through my parts bin, I found an old original
heater valve that has worked fine and does a complete "off" when you want it
to.
Years ago, for a brief time, I owned a Honda Civic and I took it to the Honda
dealer because I got heat in the footwell with the heater valve off or on (more
with it on, of course). The dealer told me "that's the way they are". I didn't
believe them at the time but now know that's the real deal. I had forgotten
this when I tried the Honda valve on the Alpine.
My recommendation; get that original NOS valve from Curt.
