headlamp retainer material?

My headlamp retainer bowls (the silver-grey ones that actually hold the
bulbs) need to be stripped of paint and bondo and corrosion. They appear
to be plated brass. What would the plating be, and could I safely
bead-blast them? I expect they'll have to be re-covered anyway. Do they need
special prep for painting, or should I have them re-plated?
