From my notes from _Automotive Engines_, by Ellinger. This is a
tech-school textbook, and says the same as a couple others I read.

Pre-Start Prep
- disconnect coil lead from distributor (coil end)
- crank over with starter and watch for oil pressure
- re-connect coil lead
- prime carbs with fuel
- set initial timing

Initial Starting
- keep running at fast idle, keeping speed constant
- monitor oil pressure
- inspect for leaks or noises
- run to normal temp

Post-Start
- re-check oil & coolant levels
- make final carb and timing adjustments

Road Test
- keep speed moderate
- on a straight section of road, accelerate and decelerate 10+ times from
  25-50 mph to seat rings
- stop, change oil and filter

Break-In
- 1500-3000 miles
- no excessive speeds or lugging
- avoid long periods at 1 speed
- after 500 miles
  . oil/filter change
. retorque head and manifolds, cold
. check and re-set valve lash
  . check and re-set carbs & timing
