Starting a newly rebuilt engine

The guy who rebuilt my engine specifically instructed me that I should NOT
start the engine until I was ready to drive and that I should not stop the
engine until I had gone out and driven to normal operating temperatures.
He was most insistent. I forget what the rationale was. I think (this is
really more of a guess here) it was so that all the metal is fully warmed
up and settles more evenly. Again, my rationale is a guess. The answer is
not. I followed it to a T.

Considering how easily head gaskets blow on these half steel half aluminum
engines, it also seems to be a good idea.

I will see if I can find the sheet he gave me with the instructions. I
also seem to recall him suggesting 30 wt high performance oil for the first
1500 miles. I'm sure he told me an RPM cap too. OH, and he did say to set
the idle up so that it would not drop below some RPM. My guess on that was
that it was 1500 or even higher. I better find that sheet.
