Oh, my, Paul.... it seems I may have started a pitched battle ;(at))
(well... I knew *somebody* had to say it!)
Ok, so the pitch is normal, I guess. I've restored quite a few
English cars through the years (everything from an Austin A-40
and Bugeye through Swallow Doretti and Turner... still working on U,
V, W, X, Y and Zed though) but never before saw such material
slathered throughout the cockpit. Must explain why Sunbeams have such
a wonderful record for staying utterly rust-free ;-)
Thanks to all of you for the comments about my mixture issues.
Several of you were kind enough to drop me a line about the booster
hose... actually, I've got that connection securely blanked off
presently as I have the booser out for rebuilding and have installed a
temporary by-pass brake line. I will do a vacuum leak-down test
on that hose before reinstalling it, though, to be sure it doesn't
compound the present problems. Thanks for that tip.
As to the jet centralising, I am pretty sure that's not it either.
Before installing the new carbs I installed Grosse Jets, checked the
float levels and checked the jets, listening for the familiar 'click'
when I dropped the piston... all seemed OK, and there is no resistance
when lifting it now that they are fitted in place.
It sees to me that somehow the engine must not be getting enough
oxygen (or too much gas) when idiling, forcing me to lean out the
mixture too much to keep it lit. That's why I suspect the PCV, as I
can see no other source of air other than the venturi's. The fuel is
delivered via the standard fuel pump, and the jet heights appear to be
according to factory spec. Curiously, setting the jets to exactly
what the WS manual says is the 'preliminary' setting (the amount of
turns down) is nearly correct for proper idiling.
(Again, does anyone know of a proper PCV replacement?)
The corollary is, of course, that maybe there is *not* something wrong
at idle, but instead that there is not enough fuel being delivered at
speed. I have not looked to see which needles are installed, but I
think they must be correct, since the brass tags on the carbs match
exactly with the Sunbeam manual specs. Has anyone experimented with
different jetting?
All the best -
Kevin
