Hello Listers... Here I go again
A few weeks ago I posted some questions about installing 14x6 Dayton wire
wheels on my Series 3 Alpine. Here's where I am today:
I received one wheel to try on the car and had a 185/70-14 tire mounted on
it. The wheel and tire cleared the fenders on all 4 corners but the inside
of the wheel rim makes contact with the top swivel bearing on the upper link
of the front suspension and grinds when the wheel is turned.
Question #1: Can I file down the top swivel bearing about 1/8" for
clearance? BTW: The brake caliper housing has plenty of clearance.
Next concern:
Since the dimensions of this wheel is substantially larger than the 4Jx13
wheel, I pushed the wheel all the way back on the splined hub and counted the
number of threads that stick out from the wheel hub. Two threads are visible
with the 14x6 wheel and 5 threads are visible with the 13" wheel. That's
about 1/4 " to 3/8" less thread to work with on the 14 " wheel when
tightening the spinners.
Question #2: Is this critical if the spinner can still bottom out on the
wheel hub and lock it down?
Although the Dayton 72 spoke chrome wire wheel is absoultely beautiful, if
the answer to either of these questions is no, the 14x6 Dayton goes back.
Then I will try to find 14x5.5" wheels, either Mini look-alikes with splined
hubs or chrome wire, and start all over again.
Your help answering these questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you
