I'm not an expert at the Strombergs but here is my input. It does sound
like a fuel flow problem. Here would be a step by step diagnosis that I
would try...It's reasonably quick and hits key points.
1) Check to make sure that the dash pots move up and down easily with no
hang ups....this would be an obvious problem without disassembly.
2) I assume you replaced the float valve and adjusted the height properly
you may want to recheck this detail on each float. It could be a problem.
Make sure you have free movement. The float needle should go up and down
with gravity force.
3) Next, I assume you used a measuring device to set both jets at equal
heights. This is critical. I use a digital caliper, with the dashpots
off, and measure each jet while adjusting each too equal height. I set the
jets screwed all the way up and equalize them. Then I believe you back the
adjustment nut off 5 turns (better verify this). YOU HAVE TO MOVE both
nuts equally...NEVER... move one then the other different amounts. (at
this point, check with you calipers to make sure there still equal)
I can't emphasize this last detail enough.
4) Reassemble....I would recheck the fuel pump. Verify, that it is
pumping an adequate amount of fuel...this should be quick to do, disconnect
the fuel line and pump into a plastic container. Be very careful. A fuel
pressure gauge would be better but not necessary.
(This doesn't sound like a problem you have but you never know)
5) From this point it should run (assuming the Idle screws are set to open
the throttle shaft slightly). Adjust you Idle screws, a vacuum gauge would
be nice to balance the carbs but you can hear the difference if you don't
have one.
You should be running after this. Once you have set the jets with a
measuring device you can be very CONFIDENT that your jets are set equally.
By any chance, did you replace the jets with a set from Victoria British?
I once used a set from VB that was a brass barrel "Pressed" into a flange.
This flange will separate and make any jet adjustments useless. The engine
ran very lean. A new set from elsewhere was required.
Write me if you continue to have problems.
