The talk of steering boxes has brought a few people with experience out
of the woodwork, so I thought I would try my luck with my car's little
ahem, incontinence problem. The manual calls for 30wt oil in the
steering box. I obliged. The 30wt oil drained itself out of the bottom
of my steering box over a period of time. Two possibilities:
1. The seal on the output arm is toast. Can this be replaced (fairly
easily) on the car? 2. The seal will be OK with 90wt oil, as used by
Rob N. Any opinions on the use of this heavier oil. I can't see why you
would need 30wt oil in there. Hmmm, maybe muggins here misread the
manual...

Paul, My workshop manual says to use shell spirax 90 E.P. I assume that is the same as 90w gear oil. You can replace the rocker shaft seal on the car. I'm not sure how easily, but the other alternative is to remove the steering column which gets quite involved. You can buy a pitman arm puller for $15.00, pull the drop arm off the rocker shaft, pull the rocker shaft up through the steering box which will expose the shaft seal and retaining ring, pry them out and replace them. And if you're like me , this seemingly straightforward job will take 5 times as long as it should. Let me know if you want to give it a try and I' ll fill you in on all the little details.
