Something to be aware of, although many people will tell you that wire
wheels are very durable, and prototype tigers even had them, The wheels
are a very weak link, and coupled with stickier tires, creates even worse
conditions.

The 2.8 ford will make 140 static lb ft of torque compared to about 90 for
the stock SI engine. The numerically high Rootes rear ends will put
down a tremendous amount of first gear torque, which can and most likely
will break spokes, and tweak the hub splines.
A modified engine will likely make even more torque.

I would say that you could possibly pull it off if you get a very
numerically
low rear end in the car. The numbers suggest that a 2.50 ratio would yeild
the same rear wheel torque all being the same, but this being an impractible
ratio, a 2.73,2.88 or 3.09 would sufice.
8 inch and 8.8 inch fords are available that will get you these ratios.

Acceleration would suffer with these ratios, but its the only way to
keep the V6 engines additional torque from breaking the wheels and hubs.

Hey, try the Capri 4 speed tranny, it doesnt look any bigger than the
alpines.
