Jay,

Assuming all the parts are in good condition and the star
rotates freely, the self adjusting mechanism needs to be well
adjusted before they will work right.

It sounds like a ctach 22, but unless there is not a tight fit
between the shoes and the drum, the ratchet doesnt get enough
stroke to turn the star.

Then of course, it still only does it when applying the brakes
in reverse, then forward, over and over.

Saw my S3 Alpine yesterday. It's all Commodore Blue now! They are going
to let it sit for a couple of weeks to allow the paint to settle or stop
shrinking or something, and then finish it up.

Anyone have experience in making those self-adjusting rear brakes work?
Mine don't see to fully do it. I assume that there is probably too much
friction or something that prevents the mechanism from rotating before the
spring lever slips off of the gear. Maybe it needs some lubrication in the
right spots. Does anyone know? Do they simply wear out? Or, did they
just never work in the first place?

Since I am going to be pulling it apart, I can switch back to the manually
adjustable ones if the others simply never worked right.

Thanks.

Jay
