I realize that it is very difficult to diagnose symptoms without seeing and hearing them, but I am desperate for assistance...
After four years of storage, I have finally got my stock Series V started. The car is in remarkable shape...it has been garaged for the past 20 plus years, but I am at wits end with the tune.
I have followed the official shop manual's presciption for tuning and balancing the Strombergs. I even have applied a Unisyn, for the blancing the airflow, butI positively cannot maintain an even tone. The exhaust is forever splashy and inconsistent. And under load, well...I think she desperately wants to run. (She was rebuilt just before her prolonged resting period.) But, again, the "fire" is missing at all speeds. I am running premium unleaded and have observed a sooty black powdery residue. Will further leaning of the carbs eliminate this completely?
I have electronically assessed the ignition and have found it maintains dwell fairly consistently.
Back to the carbs...Would air being drawn past the bushes cause this irregularity. Is there a way to assess if the bushes need replacing? Please help, I do not remember being this frustrated in times past.
I would like to stay with the original carburetion...any suggestions for further troubleshooting or general advice on a different approach to tune?
Thanks!
Quentin Morris
