As I recall, my Alpine required a special procedure to open the hood, and it was as
you described: pull the release with one hand while reaching over the windshield to
pull the hood with the other hand. I don't recall when this began, maybe the car was
6 years old(?). I recently cleaned up the latch mechanism and rewelded the striker
pin and I think this made it work better, although I am not sure because I then
removed the assembly for painting and it is not back together again. By "cleaning
up" the mechanism I mean that I cleaned, polished the rubbing surfaces with 600 grit
paper and or wire brush, removed burrs, and lubricated the moving parts. Worked much
better after that.
