As I recall, my Alpine required a special procedure to open the hood, and it was as 
you described: pull the release with one hand while reaching over the windshield to 
pull the hood with the other hand.  I don't recall when this began, maybe the car was 
6 years old(?).  I recently cleaned up the latch mechanism and rewelded the striker 
pin and I think this made it work better, although I am not sure because I then 
removed the assembly for painting and it is not back together again.  By "cleaning 
up" the mechanism I mean that I cleaned, polished the rubbing surfaces with 600 grit 
paper and or wire brush, removed burrs, and lubricated the moving parts.  Worked much 
better after that.
